Why it’s allowed to act without asking.
Four checks, in this order, before every change it makes. Below they run in the order the loop runs them — it starts by itself, and you can cut in.
- 01
The reason is re-checked immediately before every change.
Open the file it was about to move, and it stops on its own.
- 02
Every step computes and proves its own inverse before the next change runs.
Cancel runs them backwards and reports plainly: fully undone, partly undone, or the one thing that could not be.
- 03
Nothing leaves the Mac unredacted, through exactly one outbound path that a build test enforces.
The journal stores a hash of a kind of work. It can never tell you what the work was.
- 04
Paused means the screen is not read at all — not read and discarded.
Three independent switches, one of them a file you can create in Finder with no software running.
The switches
Three independent switches. One is a file.
Each one works without the others. macOS holds the last one, not Octopus.
- Switch · 01
Pause reading
Stops reading the screen. Nothing is read or kept until you resume.
- Switch · 02
Stop
Ends a filing run at the next boundary and puts back what it can.
- Switch · 03
Quit from the menu bar
Stops everything. A file in Finder does the same with no software running.
- Switch · 04
Accessibility off
Revokes the sensor itself. macOS holds the switch, not Octopus.
Whose it is
Your boss can’t switch it on. Or read your day.
The company buys the seat. You turn it on. Your day stays on your Mac — enforced in code, not in a policy.
- Only you
Only you make it louder
It may always get quieter on its own. Off, Watching, On-call, In hand — every step up is yours.
- What it reads
It reads what changed
The focused window, when macOS says something changed. One picture of the work, kept up to date, then thrown away.
- The record
Never pixels, never names
No screenshots, video frames, page text, window titles, file names or app names in the record. A hash of a kind of work, and minutes.
Every mechanism, what enforces it, and what is not built yet
